FOUNDATION SUPPORT Private foundations have always been munificent and active supporters of Community Servings. Project Bread helped us serve our first meal with an emergency grant in January 1990, and through its annual Walk for Hunger, has given us funding every year since. The Feinstein Foundation has long been an advocate for the hungry, circulating a hunger petition each year and challenging our donors to raise crucial funds every spring.

PARTNER PROFILE:
THE AVON FOUNDATION

Community Servings is proud of our incredible partnership with the Avon Foundation. Through the Avon Foundation’s generous support since 2005 we have expanded our Breast Cancer Meals Program, bringing this program to a new level. In the past two years, our Breast Cancer Meals Program has more than doubled and we expect to serve more than 150 women and their family members in the coming fiscal year. With the Avon Foundation's help in 2007 and 2008, we aim to provide more than 50,000 meals to women and their families who are affected by breast cancer!

This year, through our Breast Cancer Meals Program, we will expand our outreach to new communities on the North Shore. At the same time, we will be growing our nutrition education program through the development of easy to understand informational materials, a workshop series and on-site dinners in our new facility for clients, referral partners and others affected by breast cancer. Workshop topics will include “Nutrition’s role in breast cancer care, treatment and management of therapy’s side effects, and “Shopping healthy on a budget.” In addition, we will host a third “Avon Breast Cancer and Nutrition Education” seminar to follow-up on our May 2006 and May 2007 seminars at the Tufts University Friedman School for Nutrition Science and Policy.

With the Avon Foundation’s help, we are also pleased to offer our clients with breast cancer “Nausea Care Packs”; a care package of foods such as crackers and soup as well as beverages such as ginger ale, to help our clients manage their nausea and receive some much needed nutrition and calories during those critical days immediately following chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

And because we know that women with breast cancer have lots of questions about nutrition and diet in managing the illness, we have partnered with the Avon Foundation to launch an interactive Food for Health: Breast Cancer and Nutrition website that will provide detailed information on medical nutrition therapy in the fight against breast cancer. This includes: how to shop and meal-plan, menus, nutrition and diet information, tips for nausea mitigation as well as a forum where individuals can ask questions to a Registered Dietitian regarding diet and breast cancer.

The Avon Foundation’s support of Community Servings is also support from the Greater Boston community. As an enthusiastic promoter of the annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Boston, we know that it is Boston’s walkers who help raise the money that supports Community Servings and other local agencies.
