Prepare for a new career in foodservice with Community Servings!
About Us
The Teaching Kitchen at Community Servings is a free, 12-week program that helps individuals overcome employment barriers and transition into foodservice careers. Open to career changers and aspiring chefs, it offers hands-on training in a high-volume commercial kitchen and a modern culinary classroom.
Trainees gain hands-on experience by preparing thousands of scratch-made, medically tailored meals for Community Servings’ clients across Massachusetts and Rhode Island and weekly gourmet meals for TK Eats. They also receive job readiness training and earn ServSafe Food Handler and Allergen Awareness certifications.
Since 2009, graduates have launched successful careers in restaurants, hotels, cafés, hospitals, schools, and more. The program’s real-world experience and supportive environment help trainees develop the skills and confidence to build a future in foodservice.

The Teaching Kitchen program provides a comprehensive, hands-on experience to prepare trainees for careers in food service. Its three main components are culinary classes, internship experience, and job readiness support.
Trainees master essential skills such as knife techniques, cooking methods, meal prep, and safe food handling while receiving weekly nutrition education from our registered dietitian nutritionists. During their internship in the Production Kitchen, trainees gain real-world experience by preparing thousands of meals for Community Servings’ medically tailored meal program.
The program also includes preparation for key certifications like ServSafe Food Handler and Allergen Awareness, as well as job readiness training in resume writing, interview skills, and financial planning. Trainees receive a free daily lunch and an hourly wage.
All materials, including chef coats and textbooks, are provided at no cost, and comprehensive job placement support is offered after graduation. Since 2009, graduates have launched successful careers in professional kitchens, catering, and more.
New class sessions begin every six weeks at Community Serving’s Jamaica Plain headquarters. Our location near the Stony Brook T station makes us easy to access via public transportation. We also offer free on-site parking for trainees with vehicles.
Thanks to the support of funding partners and the generosity of donors, tuition and materials are free to participants.
