| Breast Cancer Seminar Participants Make the Mind-Body Connection |
On Wednesday, June 4, clients, former clients, breast cancer survivors, case managers, patient navigators and nutrition students joined Community Servings' staff members for our third annual breast cancer seminar -- an integral component of the comprehensive nutrition and support services we offer to our clients and the community.
Breast Cancer and Wellness: The Mind Body Connection was the title and theme of this year's seminar -- which was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Avon Foundation. According to Jennifer Opp, Community Servings' Outreach Coordinator, the day's events offered something for everyone. Health and medical professionals made valuable contacts. Students rounded out their course work by interacting with the diverse range of participants. Clients, former clients, and breast cancer survivors benefited from the supportive environment. The morning opened with information sessions on nutrition, stress awareness and management, and the importance of exercise. After feasting on a healthy lunch of wraps and roasted carrot salad prepared by Executive Chef Brad Stevens, afternoon workshops offered real-life applications of the morning's topics. These included a healthy cooking lesson, a stress-management mediation session, and two demonstrations of exercises designed for people recovering from breast cancer surgery.
However, it was the keynote speaker, former Community Servings' client Teri Muscarella -- one of the first women with breast cancer to whom Community Servings delivered meals -- who provided the day's high point. She shared how her treatments left her depressed and eating too much of the wrong foods. But, when Community Servings' healthy and high-quality meals began to arrive, she was able to get back on track, control her portions, and battle her cancer. Now in remission and able to shop and cook for herself, Teri is an inspiration to us all.
