Supporter Spotlight: Shawmut Design and Construction

On June 16, 2009, Community Servings' CEO David B. Waters visited the South End offices of Shawmut Design and Construction with a special delivery of our signature double chocolate chip cookies.  The treats were a token of our appreciation to the staff who met a special fundraising challenge put forth by the 100% employee-owned construction management firm.

Shawmut is a long-time Community Servings' corporate partner and friend.  Their financial contribution to our 2007 capital campaign helped us meet our fundraising goal and own our Jamaica Plain industrial kitchen and nutrition center free and clear with no mortgage.  As the manager for the construction project, Shawmut staff helped us complete and move into our new home on time and on budget.  Staff members routinely volunteer in our kitchen through the Shawmut Community Outreach Providers program.  In June 2008, Shawmut's Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Brian Stys, joined Community Servings' Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, David asked Tom Goemaat, Shawmut's President and CEO, to consider serving as a LifeSavor 2009 Title Sponsor.  Having attended past LifeSavors, Tom was eager to help -- but knew it would have to be a team effort.  Tom asked both current and former Shawmut staff-owners to make personal contributions to Community Servings, which Shawmut matched up to $15,000.  All in all 42 individuals contributed $15,525.  Along with Shawmut's $15,000 contribution, Community Servings received a total of $30,525.  Since LifeSavor's fundraising costs were six percent, ninety four cents of every dollar went directly to feeding our sick clients!

"In LifeSavor's 17-year history, a title sponsor has never leveraged its own philanthropy in such a creative and innovative way," David recently said.  He continued, "It was great to meet more Shawmut staff members.  In these tough economic times we feel blessed to have such generous and committed friends who were willing to reach into their own pockets to help."
