First Cook

The First Cook is responsible for preparing soups, meats, fishes, vegetables and starch entrees from recipes and from verbal instructions and expedites the production of the meal to completion including frozen meals and the preparation of special diet meals.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepares soups, meats, fishes, vegetables and starch entrees from recipes and verbal instructions and expedites the production of the meal to completion, including frozen meals and the preparation of special diet meals
  • Works with the Executive Chef to ensure that Kitchen safety and sanitation regulations are adhered to at all times
  • Records daily temperature checks on equipment and on all prepared foods, foods holding to be served or refrigerated and food within the refrigerator units
  • Executes the directions of the Executive Chef with regard to ordering, purchasing and preparing food and food supplies
  • Accepts by signature the receipt of goods and staples shipped
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Executive Chef

 

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience independently preparing recipes from verbal instructions only which can be verified by the Executive Chef through observation and taste testing
  • Some experience guiding production staff / delegating assignments in a high production environment
  • Experience in expediting the production of meal packaging and food preparation
  • Experience with safety and food handling sanitation standards
  • Skill in the effective use of English language to read and express ideas/facts orally.
  • Experience with safety and food handling sanitation standards
  • Bilingual language ability (particularly Spanish) is helpful
  • ServSafe Certificate is a plus, but is not required
  • High School Diploma and a Certificate in Culinary Arts or equivalent relevant work experience
  • Minimum of 1 – 3 years’ experience in a high volume production establishment.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations for the effective communication with a multi-cultural population

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to cold, hot, wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Physical Demands

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision and Peripheral vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
